During these times of financial crisis, many employers are facing the prospect of giving up health benefits for their employees.  Other firms are going out of business, leaving their employees with the prospect of losing coverage.  In addition, many families and individuals are giving up expensive plans because they can no longer afford the premiums.

All of these developments threaten to add significantly to the number of Americans who are without health insurance. Often, a result of losing coverage is less visits to the doctor, less spent on preventive procedures and later on, much higher medical expenses due to the reduction in preventive visits.

It is critical to our economy that we find ways to provide at least basic coverage for as many people as possible.  One option that is offering optimism is the development of the "mini-med" plan.  These plans offer coverage for basic medical needs like doctor's visits, prescription drugs, hospital admissions, and out patient procedures.

Employers who are facing the loss of health benefits for employees can offer these plans to, at least encourage employees and their families to deal with everyday medical issues and to take advantage of opportunities to utilize preventive services. There is no doubt that this will, in the long run, reduce the incidence of major medical problems.

The "mini-med" plan is also available to individuals and families who are not working, are self-employed or who need to provide their own coverage. Going without is not an option - eventually, there will be repercussions in the form of serious helath claims.

We have evaluated the various plans available, and will be happy to provide a listing of the recommended plans to our readers. Please contact us!
